Measuring Performance

How Often Doctors Spend Enough Time

What This Indicator Measures

This indicator tracks the percentage of Western New York health plan customers that reported that their doctor "always" spent enough time with them.

Why This Measure Matters

When patients feel rushed they are less likely to sense that the doctor is listening to or understanding their needs - not to mention that they might not have the time to address all their questions or concerns. When doctors give patients the time they need, they are treating them as people, not as another appointment. This also ensures the patient will walk away with the information they need to make the best decisions for their health.

Data Sources & Notes

This chart presents summary level results from the CAHPS Health Plan survey conducted in 2008, as provided by the New York State Department of Health. The survey question for this indicator was "In the last 12 months, how often did your personal doctor spend enough time with you?" Possible responses to this question were "always," "usually," "sometimes" and "never." Western New York averages reflect enrollment-weighted averages, while national averages are from the 2008 CAHPS Health Plan Survey Chartbook.
